Spend Where Your Cases Are Won

Law Firm Marketing, Allocated by Practice-Area Economics

Law firm marketing allocated by case economics: what a signed case costs by channel and practice area, what to budget at each growth stage, and our pricing — published below, not behind a sales call.

Law firm marketing has a resource-allocation problem disguised as a visibility problem. Most firms don't fail because they spend too little; they fail because they spend the same way a firm in a completely different practice area should, chasing keywords priced for someone else's case values. A personal injury firm and an estate planning practice shouldn't share a marketing plan any more than they share a fee structure. This page lays out how we allocate: what a case is worth by practice area, where each one's fight is actually won, what to budget, how to vet any agency including us, and what our programs cost, published.

⚡ THE ANSWER UP FRONT

What marketing actually works for law firms?

The same four levers work for every firm — the Google map pack, Local Services Ads, targeted Google Ads, and search-plus-AI visibility — but the right mix depends entirely on your practice area's case economics and urgency profile. Growing firms typically invest 5% to 10% of gross revenue, tracked to signed cases rather than clicks. Our legal programs run $800 to $10,000+/month, priced by market, with CallRail attribution on every plan.

Practice-Area Economics: Where Each Fight Is Won

Here's the allocation logic in one table, built from the live keyword data we pulled for our own legal campaigns in July 2026. Notice how the winning channel changes with the economics:

Practice Area Typical Case Value The Keyword Reality Where It's Won
Personal injury $10,000 to six figures per contingency fee Head terms priced like real estate; case-type terms (dog bite, motorcycle) near-uncontested LSAs for speed + case-type SEO for cost. Full PI channel math
Criminal defense $2,500–$25,000+ flat/retained fees, hired within days of arrest "Criminal defense attorney" KD 69; "expungement lawyer" (9,000/mo) and "domestic violence lawyer" (17,600/mo) KD 0 Map pack + practice-area pages + after-hours intake. Defense strategy
Family law $3,000–$15,000+ retained, recurring caseload "Divorce lawyer near me" KD 36 long game; "uncontested divorce lawyer" (6,000/mo) KD 2 wide open Map pack + reviews + jurisdiction-specific content. Family law strategy
Estate, employment, business Lower urgency, longer consideration, relationship-driven Lighter search competition; clients research heavily before calling Content authority + AI citation, where research-phase clients form their shortlist

The pattern: urgent practice areas are won in the map pack and paid placements, because the client hires in hours. Considered practice areas are won in content and AI answers, because the client shortlists over weeks. A lawyer marketing plan that ignores this distinction buys the wrong channel at full price. The SEO layer underneath all of it, from map pack mechanics to E-E-A-T for legal's YMYL standards, lives on our law firm SEO page.

What Should a Law Firm Spend on Marketing?

The honest frame is percentage of gross revenue, staged by goal. Firms maintaining an established caseload typically run 2% to 5%. Firms actively growing run 5% to 10%. Firms attacking a competitive metro or launching a practice area run 10% to 15% and sometimes beyond, because in legal, market share is bought from incumbents who are also spending. What matters more than the percentage is the denominator discipline: budget against expected signed cases and their fee values, then hold every channel to a cost-per-signed-case number in CallRail. "We got more traffic" is an agency sentence. "Your average signed case cost $1,400 last quarter, down from $2,100" is an owner sentence.

💡 The sequencing rule that saves the most money

Buy speed first, build ownership second, add brand last. Local Services Ads and Google Ads produce cases in days and stop the day you stop paying. SEO takes months and then compounds for years. Brand spend amplifies firms that already capture demand. Most firms run this backwards, buying awareness before they can convert it, then concluding attorney marketing doesn't work.

How to Vet a Law Firm Marketing Agency (Including Us)

Legal marketing is the most burned-before market we work in, because agencies price against case values and lawyers are too busy to audit them. Four questions expose most of the problems before a contract is signed:

  • Who owns the assets when you leave? Website, content, Google Business Profile, ad accounts, tracking numbers. If the agency owns any of them, your marketing is a lease, and the exit price is starting over. Everything we build is owned by the firm, full stop.
  • What exactly does the report count? Clicks and impressions, or recorded calls and signed cases? If an agency can't tell you what a signed case costs by channel, it isn't measuring the thing you're buying.
  • Is there a rank guarantee? Nobody honest guarantees a Google position. Guarantees in legal marketing pitches are either meaningless (branded terms) or a signal the tactics won't survive the next spam update.
  • Does the contract trap you? Twelve-month terms with auto-renewal exist to survive bad results. Month-to-month exists to earn the next month. Ask why the term is the length it is.

One more, specific to legal: everything published must survive bar scrutiny under ABA Model Rule 7.2 and your state's advertising rules. An agency that promises outcomes in your ad copy is creating a disciplinary problem you'll own alone.

The AI Layer: Where Legal Marketing Is Quietly Moving

Before anyone searches "lawyer," they now ask a machine a question: what happens after a DUI, how is custody decided, do I need an attorney for this. ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI Overviews answer, and they name firms. The firms they name are the ones with consistent business data, structured schema, real reviews, and pages that answer questions in clean, citable sentences. Almost no legal marketing competitor is building this layer yet, which makes it the cheapest acquisition window in legal right now, the same first-mover condition SEO offered in 2009. We build it into every legal campaign through our AI SEO practice, and for considered practice areas it's not an add-on, it's the primary channel.

Two Things We'll Tell You That Cost Us Money

We don't buy TV, radio, or billboards. Saturation brand media works at scale, and if that's your path you need a media buyer alongside us. We run the intent layer: search, maps, LSAs, ads, AI visibility, and the attribution that prices each signed case. When your data says brand has become the bottleneck, the dashboard will show it and we'll say so.

If your intake is broken, don't hire us yet. Marketing multiplies intake; it can't replace it. A firm that misses after-hours calls or returns inquiries the next day will lose most of what any agency sends. Fix the answer speed first, sometimes that's a $300/month answering service, then buy visibility. We'd rather start a month later with a client whose phone gets answered.

Law Firm Marketing Pricing

Local SEO — $800/month

One Google Business Profile target: map pack strategy, practice-area content, citations, backlinks, CallRail tracking, monthly reporting. Right fit: solo practitioners and small firms in lighter markets. Full scope on our Local SEO packages page.

⭐ MOST COMMON FOR LAW FIRMS

Multi-Local SEO Plus — $2,000/month

Unlimited realistic location targets, advanced strategy, and consultation: multi-city map pack presence, practice-area page architecture, and the review program. Pairs with LSAs and Google Ads run against your ad budget for the full capture stack.

COMPETITIVE MARKETS

Custom — $3,000–$10,000+/month

Personal injury metros, multi-office firms, and market-attack campaigns: SEO, LSAs, and surgical Google Ads under one attribution system, scoped to your market's real tier after we pull the data. Still typically a fraction of legal-only agency retainers for equivalent scope.

Law Firm Marketing — Frequently Asked Questions

How much should a law firm spend on marketing?

Law firms typically invest 2% to 5% of gross revenue to maintain caseload, 5% to 10% to grow, and 10% to 15% or more to attack a competitive market or launch a practice area. The percentage matters less than tracking cost per signed case by channel, which is what marketing actually buys.

What is the most effective marketing for law firms?

It depends on practice-area urgency. Urgent practice areas like criminal defense and personal injury are won in the Google map pack, Local Services Ads, and fast intake. Considered practice areas like estate planning are won through content authority and AI citations, where clients research before calling. Effective law firm marketing allocates by that distinction instead of running one generic plan.

How much does law firm marketing cost per month?

Agency retainers for law firm marketing typically range from $2,000 to $20,000+ per month, with legal-only agencies commonly starting at $5,000. Lifted Websites runs legal programs from $800/month for single-location firms to $3,000–$10,000+ for competitive metros, with published pricing and call tracking on every plan.

Is SEO or paid advertising better for law firms?

Both, in sequence. Paid channels like Local Services Ads produce cases within days but stop when spending stops, while SEO takes months to mature and then compounds, typically producing the cheapest signed cases a firm acquires. Growing firms buy paid speed first and build owned SEO underneath so ad spend can taper.

What should I ask before hiring a legal marketing agency?

Four questions expose most problems: who owns the website, content, and ad accounts if you leave; whether reports count signed cases or just clicks; whether they guarantee rankings, which no honest agency does; and why the contract term is as long as it is. Asset ownership is the one lawyers most often discover too late.

Does AI search matter for law firm marketing yet?

Yes, and disproportionately for considered practice areas. Potential clients ask ChatGPT and Google's AI features legal questions before they ever search for an attorney, and those tools cite specific firms. Firms with structured data, consistent business information, and answer-first content are being named now, while most legal competitors haven't started building for it.

Working with TJ and Lifted Websites has been an incredible experience. I own and operate two home-service companies, each serving a unique vertical and a very specific clientele within the HVAC industry. TJ took the time to truly understand both businesses, our customers, and the vision behind each brand. The difference between Lifted Websites and the agency I previously worked with has been night and day. TJ provides a level of customized service and strategic thinking that is difficult to find. He is extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in all things AI, search, and SEO, and he understands how these technologies are changing the way customers find and choose service-based businesses. His communication is excellent, every deliverable has been completed on time, and he consistently makes the entire process feel organized and collaborative. One of the things I appreciate most is being able to bounce ideas off TJ, brainstorm together, and develop a clear strategic vision for the future. He listens, contributes thoughtful ideas, and genuinely cares about helping our businesses succeed. TJ is an absolute pleasure to work with, and I would highly recommend Lifted Websites to any home-service business looking for a knowledgeable, dependable, forward-thinking, and creative website and marketing partner.
