Anthropic opened a research preview of Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. It is a separate app where Claude briefs you every morning, works on tasks in the background, and checks with you before it sends, pays, signs or deletes anything. It is included in Claude Pro and Max in the US, by waitlist.
The part most launch coverage skips: Duet runs on the skills, memory and connected apps already in your Claude account. A business that has built those gets a working agent on day one. A business that hasn’t gets a polite inbox assistant. This post covers both, and it is where we will publish our own results once we are through the waitlist.
What is Claude Duet?
Claude Duet is a proactive AI agent from Anthropic, released as a research preview on October 21, 2026. It runs on Claude Opus 5.5, works on its own cloud computer, and is included in Claude Pro and Max plans in the US through a waitlist.
Anthropic built it, in its own words, for professionals and small business owners who have more on their plates than they can track. You message it like a person, by text or voice, in one ongoing thread. It works in the apps you have connected and tells you when something needs you. The details below come from Anthropic’s launch announcement, the product page and the Help Center setup guide, all published on launch day.

What Claude Duet does in a normal day
Four behaviors make up the product. Everything else is a variation on them.
- A morning brief. Each morning it reads across your email, calendar and connected apps, picks what most needs you, and can start the first steps, such as drafting replies for you to review.
- Background work. You describe a job in a short message and it works out which apps to use. Bigger results come back as files you can edit: a research brief, a financial model, a slide deck or a dashboard. It keeps working after you close the app because it runs on its own computer in the cloud.
- Check-ins, not constant pings. It looks at your connected accounts at set intervals, every few hours, and messages you only when something needs a decision.
- Approvals before anything permanent. It shows you exactly what it is about to do before it sends, pays, signs or deletes. Trading securities and moving money between accounts are off-limits even with your approval.
Payments run through Stripe. According to Stripe’s announcement, Duet can buy things you approve with Link, Stripe’s agent wallet, using a one-time virtual card, and the Stripe connector lets it send invoices and payment links, check revenue and issue refunds. Shopify’s Shop Pay works for checkout at online stores.

Anthropic’s own summary is short: the Claude app waits for you to open a chat, and Claude Duet comes to you. Here is how that plays out.

Why Duet rewards businesses that already built AI skills
Claude Duet does not come with its own knowledge of your business. It inherits the memory, skills and connected apps already set up in your Claude account, so the quality of its work depends on what you built before you were invited.
A skill in Claude is a saved set of instructions for doing one kind of job well: how you write a proposal, what goes in a monthly report, which numbers you trust and which you don’t. A connector is a live link to one of your apps. Duet uses both from the first message, which means two businesses can sign up on the same morning and get very different agents.

What we have already built that Duet will run on
At Lifted Websites we have spent 2026 building Claude workflows for the agency and for each client account. When our invitation arrives, this is what Duet inherits:
- A dedicated reporting skill for each SEO client. Each one knows that client’s site, data sources, brand colors, report sections and email format, so a monthly report starts from the client’s own rules rather than a blank template.
- One shared SEO method skill. It sets the rules every report and audit follows: Google Search Console data over third-party estimates, like-for-like date windows, and no number published without a source.
- Onboarding and proposal skills. New-client setup and sales proposals run from our real price sheet and process, not from memory.
- Live connectors to the tools we measure with. Google Search Console, GA4, Ahrefs, Semrush, CallRail, Local Falcon, Google Business Profile data, and direct WordPress access for the sites we manage.
💡 The honest version
This does not make an agency ten times better overnight, and anyone promising that about a research preview is guessing. What it does is remove setup. Duet’s value depends on judgment about what matters, and a skill is how you write that judgment down. We wrote ours down before Duet existed, so we are testing the agent, not building the foundation from scratch.
What Claude Duet means for how customers find your business
Duet is not a search engine, but it behaves like a very busy customer. It has its own browser, it reads websites that have no connector, and it can buy things with your approval. When a business owner asks it to find a supplier, compare three contractors or book a service, it will read your website and your listings and summarize what it found.
Our own data says AI is still a small referral source today. Across the client accounts we track, AI assistants sent 0.35% of website sessions and 1.4% of phone calls in Q3 2026 (details in our AI search statistics). And when we scanned 1,575 ChatGPT answers for one local trade, directories and list sites made up 82.2% of the sources cited on city searches (how to get ChatGPT to recommend your business). Agents lean on whatever they can read and verify. That points to four checks for any business:
- Put prices or price ranges, services, service area and hours on your site in plain text, not only in images, PDFs or chat widgets.
- Keep your name, address and phone identical on your website, Google Business Profile and the directories agents read.
- Make sure your site lets AI crawlers in. Some hosts and firewalls block them by default.
- Answer the questions buyers ask on the page itself, one clear answer per question.

Where Claude Duet falls short today
Anthropic is direct about the preview’s limits, and they matter more than the demo video:
- It can misread a thread or misjudge what is urgent.
- It checks every few hours, so something urgent can arrive between checks.
- Its background work uses your plan’s limits, so heavy users will hit them sooner.
- You can’t watch it work in its browser or take over.
- It can’t change your work in Claude or see files on your computer.
- It doesn’t call or text other people, and Microsoft 365 is not connected yet.
- It is US only, Pro and Max only, and there is no Team plan for a staff rollout.
Early reviews match. Claire Vo, testing it for Lenny’s Newsletter on launch day, called it the most polished agent launch she had seen, then said it was not proactive enough to stay top of mind and was slowed by response time on real work.

Does Claude Duet use my existing Claude skills and connectors?
Yes. Claude Duet runs on your Claude account, so your memory, skills and connected apps are there from the first message. It can read your work in Claude but cannot change it, and it cannot see files on your computer.
Can Claude Duet replace an SEO or marketing agency?
No. Claude Duet can watch your inbox, draft replies, build reports and follow up on tasks. It does not earn links, reviews or citations from other websites, and it follows whatever instructions and skills it is given. It makes a good agency faster. It does not decide strategy for you.
Will Claude Duet change how customers find local businesses?
Claude Duet uses its own browser and can buy through Stripe’s Link, so it reads business websites the way a customer would. Businesses with prices, services, hours and contact details in plain text are easier for any AI agent to evaluate. How often Duet contacts or recommends businesses is not measurable yet.
