โšก Quick answer

What medical SEO is

Medical SEO, also called healthcare SEO, is the work of ranking a medical practice in the Google Map Pack, in organic results for condition and treatment searches, and in AI answers from ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews. Google holds health content to stricter quality rules, so it runs on named providers, clinician-reviewed pages and HIPAA-aware reviews. Lifted Websites runs it from $800/month for one location.

Patients pick providers from search results: the Map Pack for "urgent care near me," organic results for "knee replacement recovery," and more and more an AI answer that names two or three practices. Ranking a healthcare business there is harder than ranking a plumber, on purpose. This page explains why, routes you to the right specialty program, and shows what it costs.

Why medical SEO plays by different rules

Google classifies health content as "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL), so pages that can affect a person's health are judged on experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trust (E-E-A-T) before anything else. That framework, set out in Google's helpful content documentation and its quality rater guidelines, is why a polished practice site with anonymous content stalls while a plainer site with clinician-reviewed pages climbs.

In practice that means four things in every medical campaign:

  1. Named providers. Content attributed to a clinician, with credentials shown and Physician schema behind it.
  2. Clinical review. Condition and treatment pages your providers actually read and approve before they publish.
  3. Cited sources. Any clinical claim links to a primary source, not another agency blog.
  4. Consistent entity data. Practice name, providers, specialties and locations match across the site, Google Business Profile and directories, following Google's rules for practitioner and practice listings.

Generic agencies skip all four because their other verticals don't need them. In healthcare, they are the ranking factors.

Medical SEO by specialty

Search behavior differs by specialty, so the programs do too. This hub covers the shared strategy; each specialty page covers its own keyword landscape.

Physicians, urgent care and multi-provider groups outside these specialties run on this hub's core program: the same structure, mapped to your specialty's keywords during onboarding.

What our healthcare SEO services include

  • Local SEO and Google Business Profile. Provider and practice profiles, correct medical categories and the steady reviews that decide "near me" searches, built on our local SEO foundation. Groups with several offices use our multi-location SEO structure.
  • Condition and treatment content. Pages built around the long-tail and symptom searches patients type, attributed to your providers, reviewed by your clinical team and cited to primary sources.
  • HIPAA-aware reputation management. Confirming someone is a patient in a public review reply, or publishing identifiable photos without written authorization, creates problems under HIPAA that no ranking justifies. Our reply templates engage reviewers without confirming treatment.
  • Technical SEO and schema. Physician and MedicalClinic structured data, site speed and crawl health, plus CallRail on every campaign so new-patient calls are counted, not assumed.

How much demand there is for medical SEO

US monthly searches for the terms practice owners use when they shop for this service, pulled October 2026 from both tools we use. Neither tool is right on its own, so we plan against the lower figure.

SearchAhrefs vol.Semrush vol.Difficulty (Ahrefs / Semrush)
healthcare seo agency3,8003,6000 / 27
healthcare seo3,3004,4004 / 35
medical seo2,1004,4005 / 28

medical seo services1,6001,9004 / 19
seo for doctors1,3002,9007 / 23
seo for medical practices6001,60012 / 29

The same gap between "easy" and "hard" shows up for patient searches in your own specialty and city. Part of onboarding is pulling those numbers for your market, so the first pages we build target searches your site can realistically win.

๐Ÿฉบ The AI layer

Patients ask AI health questions first now

When we checked in October 2026, Google showed an AI Overview for "medical seo" itself, built from nine sources including YouTube, guides and agency pages. Patients get the same treatment for "who should I see for this near me." Those answers draw on provider profiles, reviews and crawlable practice content, and AI tools are cautious about health sources: credentialed, consistent practices get named. ChatGPT Search retrieves through Bing's index, so Bing visibility is part of the work. Every medical plan includes this layer through our generative engine optimization practice.

How to choose a medical SEO company

Lists of the "best medical SEO companies" rank agencies by size or ad spend. A better test is whether an agency can answer five questions in writing, including us:

  1. Who reviews clinical content? The answer should be your providers, with their names on the page.
  2. How do you handle reviews and patient photos? Listen for written authorization and reply templates that never confirm treatment.
  3. What do you report? Rankings alone are a vanity metric. Ask for new-patient calls and form fills by source.
  4. What does it cost, in writing? An agency that won't publish or quote a monthly price up front is hard to compare.
  5. Can you show Search Console data from a healthcare client? Real numbers, not a screenshot of one good day.

โœ… Our answer to question five

Our client Sage Dental NJ, a New Jersey implant practice, earned more than 13,500 Google impressions on its top 20 implant searches in the 28 days ending October 19, 2026, with page-one average positions on cost searches like "tooth implant cost for one tooth" (7.8). Those numbers come straight from Google Search Console and run on the same credential-first, HIPAA-aware program described on this page.

โœ… What steady demand looks like for one practice

One OB-GYN practice I work with has received more than 200 calls a month for years, every one tracked in CallRail. Search is one part of that, alongside the practice's reputation and referrals, and the call tracking is how we know which part is doing what.

Medical SEO pricing

Lifted Websites publishes its prices. Every plan is a flat monthly fee and includes the clinician-review workflow and CallRail tracking.

Local SEO: $800/mo

One practice location with one managed Google Business Profile: provider pages, condition and treatment content, review program and reporting. Full scope on our local SEO packages page.

โญ Most popular for groups

Multi-Local Plus: $2,000/mo

Up to three managed Google Business Profiles plus unlimited location pages, built at the plan's monthly content pace. Each additional profile is $800/mo, in any metro or state.

Custom: $3,000โ€“$10,000+/mo

Competitive metros, surgical specialties and multi-provider systems. Priced by how competitive the market is, not by how many offices you have.

โš ๏ธ A fair warning on fit

Healthcare SEO in a competitive metro is a 6 to 12 month build. A practice that won't put provider names and credentials on its content will underperform with us or anyone, because the YMYL standard doesn't bend. If your providers can't spare time to review pages, tell us up front and we will plan a slower content pace instead of skipping review.

Medical SEO FAQs

What is medical SEO?

Medical SEO is search engine optimization for healthcare practices: ranking in Google's Map Pack for local patient searches, in organic results for condition and treatment searches, and in AI-generated answers. Google applies stricter quality standards to health content, so provider credentials, clinical review and cited sources are part of how pages rank.

How much do medical SEO services cost?

Lifted Websites charges $800 per month for one practice location with one managed Google Business Profile, $2,000 per month for up to three profiles plus unlimited location pages (each additional profile is $800 per month), and $3,000 to $10,000+ per month for competitive metros, surgical specialties and multi-provider systems.

How do I choose a medical SEO company?

Ask who reviews clinical content, how the agency handles patient reviews and photos under HIPAA, whether reports show new-patient calls rather than rankings alone, what the monthly price is in writing, and whether it can show Search Console data from a healthcare client. Agencies that cannot answer all five clearly are a risk in a regulated field.

Can medical practices use patient reviews and photos in marketing?

Carefully. Patients can post reviews freely, but a practice's public reply must never confirm someone is a patient or mention their treatment. Testimonials and before-and-after photos need documented patient authorization under HIPAA. Done correctly, reviews are one of the strongest signals in medical SEO; done carelessly, they are a compliance incident.

How long does healthcare SEO take to work?

Local and Map Pack visibility typically moves in 3 to 6 months. Competitive treatment keywords and metro markets take 6 to 12 months, because Google is slower to promote new health content until trust signals build up. Practices that start earlier tend to stay ahead once rankings compound.

Is medical SEO different from healthcare SEO?

No. The terms are used interchangeably, along with SEO for doctors. All three describe the same work: local visibility, credentialed content, technical health and AI search optimization for providers, practices and healthcare organizations.

Working with TJ and Lifted Websites has been an incredible experience. I own and operate two home-service companies, each serving a unique vertical and a very specific clientele within the HVAC industry. TJ took the time to truly understand both businesses, our customers, and the vision behind each brand. The difference between Lifted Websites and the agency I previously worked with has been night and day. TJ provides a level of customized service and strategic thinking that is difficult to find. He is extremely knowledgeable and well-versed in all things AI, search, and SEO, and he understands how these technologies are changing the way customers find and choose service-based businesses. His communication is excellent, every deliverable has been completed on time, and he consistently makes the entire process feel organized and collaborative. One of the things I appreciate most is being able to bounce ideas off TJ, brainstorm together, and develop a clear strategic vision for the future. He listens, contributes thoughtful ideas, and genuinely cares about helping our businesses succeed. TJ is an absolute pleasure to work with, and I would highly recommend Lifted Websites to any home-service business looking for a knowledgeable, dependable, forward-thinking, and creative website and marketing partner.
