So we did a post about Google giving free websites in Iowa which we thought was a great idea and still do. With so many local small business owners not having a website in 2011 it’s a no brainer and great for the economy.
We thought Google did this in Iowa because hell it’s small enough for Google to manage the process with Intuit and a good area to test and start. Well, now Google is targeting the big apple and New York. They even launched a website about this free website giveaway to businesses in New York City.
It’s still a great idea but here is where we come in if you are a New York small business owner in New York or Iowa. Most of these websites are “templates” as the site mentions which is fine and a good start. They aren’t designed on WordPress a great and easy to use content management system that is great for blog marketing. They are on a “site builder” platform that can still be time consuming and difficult to understand to a “hair stylist” or “photographer”.
As Google, says in their local seminars, websites are great for your existing clients but without “traffic” (this is where Google comes in and why they are doing it) then they are just a billboard in the desert. Another thing to consider is you will be choosing from a “template” as every other business and isn’t a custom designed website. The websites are “free” for a year and then you pay Intuit forever as long as they own your domain name and you use their hosting.
There is always a catch to free and you get what you pay for. This is still a great program for thousands of businesses and with 52% of small business in New York not having a website this is a great option to consider. Just know what you are paying for and read the “rules” to make sure it’s the right thing for your business.
